Bespoke Specialist Provision

The Koru Project provides a bespoke, therapeutic form of alternative specialist provision (ASP) for children who find it difficult to participate fully or flourish in a school environment.

Koru practitioners are experienced arts therapists, sports mentors, teachers, SEND and forest school specialists. Koru BSP is provided by referral for a specified duration, with the aim of supporting inclusion or re-engagement in education.

There are many reasons why a child may not feel at ease in the busy and structured timetable of the classroom.

For example:

  • ADHD

  • Autism

  • SEND-including abilities beyond the scope of peers.

  • Developmental trauma

  • Sensory issues

  • Illness or injury

  • Experience of abuse

  • Separation from family

  • Exile from home country

  • Generalised anxiety disorder

Bespoke Specialist Provision nature

For a child who experiences any of these, the classroom can be an overwhelming place, causing them to withdraw, refuse to attend or act in disregulated ways that cause harm to themselves or others.

In Koru BSP we come alongside each child to provide a kind, empathetic and attuned presence that establishes a sense of safety and helps to calm and regulate their nervous system.

Over time, as the child discerns it is safe to trust, they are able to relax into the therapeutic space created by the practitioner, relate more effectively and let go of some of the behaviours that arise from being overwhelmed, anxious or on high alert.

Practitioners draw on a range of specialisms to provide creative, sensory, physical and playful activities that meet the needs and interests of each child. Our sessions create a renewed sense for the child that they are valued and that the qualities which make them unique can be celebrated and shared with others.

Our approach lays the foundation for calm, regulated behaviour, readiness to learn and positive reciprocal relationships. The BSP provided by the Koru Project enables many children to engage in mainstream or specialist education and learn successfully alongside their peers.
