Forest School and therapy in a natural environment
'To understand the wild you must first understand the wood.'
Robert MacFarlane
Forest School offers children the chance to experience their place in nature, where for a moment, the walls of the classroom become the trees and the sky.

In a woodland environment, children use natural materials to make creative artwork, build dens, learn skills of orienteering and map making and to engage in imaginative play.
In a therapeutic context, the forest school environment offers a unique opportunity for children who have experienced trauma or difficulties in engaging with education, to know the peace and freedom that comes from regular connection with the natural world.
As children are immersed in the sounds and scents of the woodland, their nervous systems become calmer and more regulated. Skills of observation develop as they become familiar with seasonal changes and the plants and animals that belong to the place. Confidence and autonomy is established as children take part in activities and respond imaginatively to the landscape.
The Koru Project offers Forest School as part of its Bespoke Specialist Provision in education and also as a compliment to individual and group therapy and mentoring.
Time spent in the natural environment is beneficial for all ages and forms a vital part of our therapeutic provision. Walking and talking sessions and the activities used in forest school are also used effectively with young people, adults and groups.
